Hailstorms occur frequently throughout the United States where VELUX residential skylights are installed. The most frequent damage experienced by VELUX skylights during hailstorms is damage to the aluminum cladding covers from hailstone impacts. Larger hailstones can result in unseen damages to the primary weatherseal securing the glass to the aluminum cladding. Therefore, replan the entire skylight anytime the skylight has been damaged by hailstone larger than 2″ in diameter. Anytime there is a hail damage to the padding sealed directly to the skylight glazing (glazing profile), replace the skylight as the primary weather seal is likely compromised.
